The Brooklyn D.A. Charles Hynes is absolutely wrong to allow haredim who suspect child sex abuse to let their rabbis decide if the potential crimes should be reported to police, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Friday.

Bloomberg told the New York Times through a spokesman that he “completely disagrees” with Brooklyn D.A. Charles Hynes’ decision to not object to Agudath Israel of America’s position that haredim must get permission from a rabbi before reporting child sex abuse allegations to police, the D.A., of child protection services.

“Any abuse allegations should be brought to law enforcement, who are trained to assess their accuracy and act appropriately,” the mayor’s spokesman Marc LaVorgna told the Times.
